August 2013
Hi everyone,
The weather is warming up and the phone has started ringing again. It’s always about this time of year that the bookings for photography increase as the weather warms.
SECOND CHANCE
This past week I was reminded, by a couple of conversations, how many couples end up with disappointing results from their wedding photographers. You could argue that, because 80% of them use a family member or friend to photograph the most important day of their lives, it’s their own fault. But it still remains that they often have terrible images or no images from their special day.
The problem is so prevalent that we are considering offering a package for couples to relive part of their wedding day and us do some great images for them.
GRANDMA & GRANDAD
Another thing that I’ve wondered about for a long time is why more older people don’t have professional photos taken. I realize that it may be a “I don’t look as good as I used to” thing, but surely any person would love to have a quality photograph of their parents and grandparents to remember them by. It would be such a valuable heirloom for future generations as well.
Just on that point. How great would it be to record a video interview with your parents or grandparents about their lives. Imagine if you could watch your great grandma talking about her childhood in the 1800’s. How great would that be.
We all have the simple technology to do this, we just need to take the time to do it.
STILL HAVE
I still have a 60cm rotary trimmer for trimming large prints for $20.00 if anyone is interested.
KEEP IN TOUCH
Don’t forget that we have a dedicated Facebook page for people who have done a course or more with us. It allows you to talk with other photographers, those who were in your course or upload images for feedback. Opinions on photographic matters are also welcomed.

Some photography tips
Shooting on Manual exposure
I’m constantly amazed at the light that goes on in people’s eyes when I teach them how to shoot on Manual exposure. It’s because they have finally gotten control of their SLR camera.
Even professional photographers get excited about the possibilities of the amazing images possible by just understanding apertures and shutter speeds.
It takes a little practice (as most worthwhile things do) but it opens up a new world of being able to control your images.
Look for the light
People sometimes ask me “What is the most important tip for photographers”. My answer is “Look at the light”.
Light is what makes a photograph, literally and creatively.
If you are outdoors or using natural light, look at how the light is working on your subject and how you can modify
the light for better effect.
If you are in an indoor situation, create light that tells the story you want to tell. Or you may want to create light that will flatter a portrait sitter.
The more you look for the light and learn about light, the better your images will become.

Newsletter
July 2013
Hi everyone,
Well the winter “slow down” has hit with bang this month. We went from shooting an average of 8 sessions a week in May to 1 or 2 per week last month. I suppose it gives me time to catch upon administrative duties and bookwork.
Yay!
STUFF FOR SALE
I’ve been doing some cleaning out and have finally decided that I need to make better use of the old darkroom, so I’m selling all of my darkroom stuff including 3 enlargers, 15 trays (up to 60cm), electronic exposure timer, many processing tanks, colour processing drum, safelight, lots of printing paper in various sizes and various accessories collected over the years. All for $50.00 to someone who is keen to use it.
I also have a 60cm rotary trimmer for trimming large prints for $20.00.
SEMINARS
I attended a couple of great seminars last month. One was presented by Israel Smith (an inspirational photographer from Sydney) who spoke about work/life balance and getting your real priorities sorted in your life.
The other one was titled “The Wow! Seminar” about – guess what – marketing. This one was presented by John Dwyer and had some great advice about getting your website sorted and giving your clients what they really want.
Also there was some stuff about giving away free petrol but I’m not sure that that will work for me.
NEXT DOOR
Newcastle Bridal Warehouse in Boolaroo have consolidated their two businesses into one shop so the shop next to our studio is vacant. So if you know someone who is looking for 100 square meters of shop space please let them know. (except if they are photographers).

Some photography tips
Lens choice
Because many of us predominantly use zoom lenses rather than primes nowadays, the skill of choosing the correct focal length for the shot has largely been forgotten. Most people just use the focal length that gets everything that they need in the shot.
A long focal length (telephoto) will compress perspective in a photograph, lessening the size difference between close and far away subjects and creating less apparent depth of field. They tend ,also, to be more flattering to faces.
A short focal length (Wide angle) creates more feeling of depth by making objects in the foreground appear larger and backgrounds appear further away. More practice is needed to get the best from a wide angled focal length but the results can be amazing.
Zooming a lens in or out is not the same as moving closer or further away from your subject.
So next time you zoom in or out, think about the effect of the changing focal length. You may wish to consider walking closer or further from your subject instead.
Old Flashes
Be aware that using uncle Harry’s old flash that he gave you on your digital camera may not be a good idea. Many older style flash units use a higher trigger voltage than may be safe for your DSLR. I’ve seen damaged cameras caused by this very reason. If in doubt DON’T.

Newsletter
June 2013
Wow! A monthly newsletter out on the first week of the month….I’m amazed.
Anyway I hope you are all well. Not a lot happening this month but here it is.
Update on crashed hard drives.
In the last newsletter I told you of a pro photographer friend who lost photo files when their hard drives decided to fail. Well the news is that the files were recovered at a cost of more than $1000. So make sure that you back up your stuff on as many drives as you can.
I once heard a statement from a “big time” professional photographer who said “There are 2 kinds of photographers in this world…Those who have lost their files and those who are about
to lose their files”.
Networking night
Because so many of our ex-students have successfully set up their photography businesses, and because photography tends to be a fairly individual persuit with not a lot of direct contact with peers, we have set up a series of "get togethers" at the studio simply to talk and learn from each other for the mutual benefit of all. The next one will be on Thursday 13th June at 7pm. Please contact the studio if you are coming. Feel free to bring some recent images, techniques or problems to share.
I’ll post more specifics on the “Students of Imagine Studios” facebook page when I get organised.
Keep in Touch

Protect your online images
Recently I’ve been hearing of more and more photographers having their online images stolen by companies or individuals to use as their own. The mentality seems to be “if they are online, they are free to use”. A prominent watermark will not prevent all image thefts but it will discourage the majority of them.
Apologies
To those people who receive 2 or 3 newsletters each month, my apologies. We have a few different data bases that we use to send out the newsletters and some duplication always happens.

Photographic Tips
Accurate Focus
The popularity and availability of large aperture (fast) lenses has led to the realisation that many modern DSLR’s don’t have as accurate an auto focus as the manufacturers would have us believe. Sharp focus is achievable even with very limited Depth of field, but you may have to resort to manual focus to get the best results.
Look for the light
When shooting on location at any time of day, the first thing to consider is the quality and direction of the available light. Look for the light first because the success of your images will depend on it.
See you next month.

Newsletter
May 2013
Hi everyone, welcome to the May newsletter. I hope you are all well. Don’t forget if you don’t wish to receive our monthly newsletter, just reply “Unsubscribe” to us and we will take you off the list.
Scary situation
A serious problem occurred for a local pro photographer when she had 2 hard-drives crash at the same time recently. We all expect that, if we back up our images onto multiple drives that we are safe. Maybe we need to be using more backups than we think. It is a very expensive exercise to recover files (if they can be recovered at all).
New Broom
We are undergoing a few changes here at ‘Imagine Studios’ with the help of “Benjamin P Ward – Marketing Superhero”. Ben is restructuring our corporate identity with new logos, website, marketing strategies and branding. Stay tuned to see the results over the next few months.
Off-camera Flash Workshops
We are conducting 2 outdoor workshops at Jesmond Park on the 19th and 26th May to help people get a handle on off-camera flash techniques.
We only have one place left on the 19th and a few still available on the 26th. There will be 2 models in attendance and only 8 photographers. Cost is $60.00 pre paid. Don’t worry if you don’t have the flash gear, we will supply some equipment. You just need to bring your camera. Notes will be provided on the day.
Photoshop Course
Our once a year “Adobe Photoshop for Photographers” course begins this Wednesday 15th May. We still have a few places left if you are interested. It is a 6 week course on Wed evenings. You don’t need a laptop, all demonstrations will be projected onto a large screen.

Photographic Tips
A clean lens allows for maximum image quality but be careful of too much lens cleaning because you can rub off the thin chemical coating on the glass and render the lens unsharp. Make sure you have a clear
filter on the front of your lens which will solve both problems.
Horizons
Try to keep your horizons level when you expose an image. They can be straightened later but you may lose some periferal detail.
Remember, it is possible to redo some courses.
Many people have done this in the past and we give a $100 discount to anyone redoing a course.

Newsletter
March 2013
Hi everyone, welcome to our March newsletter even though some of you will be receiving it in early April.
The family and I have just returned from a short holiday and I am ready to get back into the swing of things.
Personal work
Whether you are working as a full time or part time photographer you should make the time to work on some personal photographic projects. Make them the type of images that you can stretch your abilities and your imagination. The kind of images that you would love to do if you didn't have the restrictions of day to day reality.
Sometimes it is hard to make the time for these projects but they will benefit your photography in the long run.
I've been experimenting lately with "freelensing" and also some "flash composite" techniques. When I'm happy with the results, I'll post some on the facebook page. I also have many new ideas that I will try in the months to come and may be incorporating them into the wedding and portrait work when I can.
Pin-up Shoots
We've had a lot of interest lately in "Pin-up " style shoots where the clothing, hairstyles and photography have a 1940's/50's feel. The nostalgia craze has given rise to this movement so we have been collecting relevant props and accessories to style the shoots.
Studio expansion
We have decided to expand our shooting options at the studio by using the outdoor area at the back of the building. We can shoot natural and sunlight portraits with a range of foliage backgrounds, brick walls and stairs. It also gives us the option of using mains powered flash heads in an outdoor setting which will allow us to easily overpower the ambient sunlight for much greater lighting control.
Networking opportunity
Because so many of our ex-students have successfully set up their photography businesses, and because photography tends to be a fairly individual persuit with not a lot of direct contact with peers I am considering a series of "get togethers" at the studio simply to talk and learn from each other for the mutual benefit of all.
The first one will be on Thursday 18th April at 7pm. Please contact the studio if you are coming. Feel free to bring some recent images, techniques or problems to share.
It will also be open to non professionals but numbers will be limited because of space.
I’ll post more specifics on the “Students of Imagine Studios” facebook page when I get organised.
Reconfigured courses
Because of the increasing enquiries we are getting from non-SLR users, I have modified our basic course structure to include users of all photographic devices.
It is not a major overhaul. The “Basic 3-hour SLR workshop” essentially stays the same ,but the 3-week “Basic Extension” course has been modified to be relevant to SLR, compact camera, smart phone and tablet users. This course does not necessarily teach the technicalities of your camera but will give you the skills to move forward with your imaging and produce a higher percentage of attractive photographs. It will also demonstrate some effective techniques to add impact to your work whether it be landscape, portraits, close up, sport, fine art,.... The course will be called “Effective Photographic Techniques”.
Photographic Tips
Sensor Cleaning: Although your SLR may have a sensor cleaning facility, dust can still adhere to your sensor and cause dark spots on your images. Having your sensor professionally cleaned can be a rather costly but necessary expense from time to time, limiting the dust from entering your camera in the first place is a good practice. Change lenses only when necessary and try to do it in a dust free environment.
DON”T use a blower brush or any blowing device inside your camera. It will simply increase the dust settling on your sensor.
If you do need a sensor cleaned, make sure that the person is properly trained to do the job.
Radio Triggers: These units are used to fire a flash remotely from your camera and range in price from $20 to $1000 for a set (transmitter and receiver). There are many on the market to choose from. Experience has taught me that the less expensive triggers tend to be less reliable so a few “back up” units will come in handy. The dramatic lighting effects possible with off-camera flash are well worth the effort in investing in triggers and learning about their possibilities.
Yong Nuo: Looking for a powerful yet inexpensive flash unit for on or off camera use? Then investigate the “Yong Nuo 560” flash units (easily available through Ebay).

Photo tips
Groups – When photographing groups, try to arrange the group into a pyramid shape (wide at the bottom).
Make sure that couples are together and that the group doesn’t extend too far back for your depth of field.
Use fill flash to ensure good light on all faces
Horizons – The position of the horizon in a landscape or seascape can influence the “mood” of the scene and the impression that the viewer will have of the image. Firstly try to avoid a centrally placed or sloping horizon.
A high horizon gives an impression of confinement, safety, and comfort. A low horizon gives the feeling of isolation,
Openness and freedom. Experiment with horizon placements to see for yourself.

January 2013
Hi everyone,
We are back at work now after the Christmas break. I hope you all had a wonderful time to see out 2012.
It was a pretty good year for us. We saw a 19% increase in sales over the year which we are pleased with.
School Formals
Thanks to the photographers and assistants who helped out with the 15 school formals that we shot over Nov – Dec.
Shooting 200 – 400 shots in a night, processing them the next day and uploading them to the website by 6pm is a challenge but we mostly managed it on time. Sales from the formals were down a bit from previous years due to the fact ( I think) that most mum and dads had their own SLR’s at the venue.
Proud of our models (Part 2)
Another one of our models has achieved success recently in the US.
Tara Bealieu modeled for our photography classes for a number of years and then moved to LA to further her career.
She has had regular work modeling, acting in shows and feature films and now is the co-host of a new TV show called “Killer Karaoke”. Google it to see Tara at work.
Valentines Day
We have a special promotion for Valentines day.
Glamour/Boudoir photo shoot including A4 sized enlargement for $49.00.
Or you can upgrade to include professional hair styling and make up for $50.00 more.
We have had some enquiries from ex students wondering if it is possible to redo some courses.

Photo tips
Depth of Field – remember that the depth of field in your photograph extends 60% behind and 30% in front of your focus point.
So, if you are photographing a group of people in 4 rows, you should focus on the 2nd row to be sure that they are all sharp.
RAW
Shooting RAW will maximize the information captured in your image, but you will need to add some contrast, saturation and possibly some sharpness in post production.
Setting up an action in Photoshop or a preset in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw can make things easier.

October 2012
Hi everyone,
Just getting back into the swing of things after a short holiday with the family.
It always takes about 2 weeks to catch up after a week away. I can’t figure that out.
School Formals Begin
We have about 15 school formals to shoot in November/December so it is a hectic time both in and out of the studio.
My wife Allyson assists me with most of the formals but if any ex students would like to assist aswell you will get an idea of what it is like to shoot 150 excited teenagers in 2 hours. Please let me know if you are interested because we can only have one extra person at each job
Proud of our models
Two of our regular class models have achieved success in the last few weeks. Allira Bull has won first place in the world sport aerobics championships in the Netherlands. To be world champion is a great achievement.
Also Sarah Fraser (Miss Australia) is currently competing in the Miss International Pageant in Japan and has already secured contracts for cosmetic and fashion campaigns. Well done girls.
Of course you may remember a girl who modeled for a few of our classes back in 2002. She went on to be Jennifer Hawkins. So you never know who you may be shooting in our photography classes.

Newsletter
August 2012
Hi everyone,
As you can see this month we have decided to include some photography tips in the newsletters to help you remember some key elements of your photography courses. The workload at the studio is getting on top of us at the moment and we are a little behind in our post processing. So for those of you hanging out to see the results of your photoshoots, we hope we will be caught up by the end of the week. We will contact you to arrange your proof showing at a time that is convenient to you.
Photoshop CS6
CS6 is available in the shops and online now. I’ve spotted the “Student” version at a local retailer for $180.
The cost seems to be reducing with each new release.
Wedding Assistants
We are slowly getting through the list of students wanting to assist us with our wedding shoots. So if you are on the list please be patient, your time will come.
Facebook Group
The “Students of Imagine Photo Studios” facebook group has been well received by many of you. If you would like to join the group, the link is below.

Photography Courses
Most courses are running down or finished at the moment. We tend not to run them in the warmer months because of the increased workload in the studio.
The Ultimate Course finished last weekend with our Bridal shoot at Morriset. Thanks to our Bride and Groom and all participants. It’s a long course but I’m sure you found it worthwhile.
The Advanced Photography course is almost midway through with our Lingerie shoot this week and our commercial and Fine Art nude shoots to be done in the next few weeks.
The Photoshop course wound up a couple of weeks ago. We have had some enquiries about a new start date for the next one. At this stage it will be early in the new year unless we have enough demand and can fit one in before Christmas
The only courses we have coming up are:
“Professional Portrait” course begins……… Tuesday 14th August 2012…….. 7pm till 9pm (places available)
http://www.imaginephotogallery.com.au/courses/61222
“Basic Digital SLR 3 hour workshop” ……... Saturday 25th August 2012 ……9am till noon
“Basic Digital SLR” 5 week course begins ………..Thursday 23rd August 2012…….. 7pm till 9pm

Contact me for bank details and enrolment confirmation.
Father’s Day Special
We have a special for Father’s Day for $50.00 which will get you a studio photoshoot and an A4 sized enlargement. Gift vouchers are also available
A Word of Caution
Some people have mentioned to us that they have detected some bad stuff (viruses etc) in downloaded Photoshop actions and textures. The free ones seem to be the worst risk. So be careful when downloading any Photoshop add ons.
Studio Hire
Just in case you were unaware of it, we do hire the studio to ex-students for $50.00 per hour during business hours and $100.00 per hour after business hours.
Photo tips
Diopter adjustment. Make sure that you adjust the small wheel or slider next to your viewfinder which will help to set the viewfinder optics to suit your eyesight
It will not have any effect on your image captured von the sensor. It simply allows you to see and focus on the subject more clearly.
Angle of Attack. When shooting any subject (especially People), Think about your camera angle and what affect it has on the subject.
Close up portraits generally look more flattering from a slightly higher camera position, except if you want the subject to appear more powerful and confident. Then an eyelevel or slightly lower camera position can work
Full length portraits will usually benefit from a low camera position to improve the perspective of the body and not shorten it too much. Try to avoid full length portraits from above.
.
Short side Lighting. When using either natural or artificial light, turning your subject’s face towards the lightsource will generally give a more flattering result.
We have in the past had students enjoyed courses so much that they have done them multiple times.
Don’t forget that if you would like to repeat a course that you have already completed a substantial discount will apply
See you all next month
